Our News - The Big Bang Eastern
We're really pleased to announce that we, along with STEM TEAM Essex and SETPOINT Hertfordshire, have been awarded the contract to hold The Big Bang Eastern. This regional Science Fair will be held at Duxford Imperial War Museum on Friday 16th July. It celebrates students' achievements in science, technology, engineering and maths and work undertaken as part of the British Science Association CREST Award Scheme and Young Engineers. Our guest speaker will be Lucy Hawking, jounalist and author of George's Secret Key to the Universe which she wrote with her father, Professor Stephen Hawking. We also have an interative science presentation by The Naked Scientists and hands-on activities related to The Big Bang. This fantastic event is open to pupils from 9-18 years old in the Eastern Region and is likely to be oversubscribed. Have a look at our flyer and register by email to stempoint@stemteamcambridgeshire.org.uk.
STEM TEAM Cambridgeshire Activities
STEM TEAM Cambridgeshire offer a range of STEM activities for primary pupils:
- Bridge Building - KS2 - Pupils find out about tension and compression and how to make strong structures. They design and build a bridge out of paper tubes or K'Nex and use a Computer Aided Design Package to investigate how engineers design bridges today.
- Rockets - KS2 - Pupils learn about the physics behind how a rocket flies, what they are used for and make and lauch their own.
- Light - KS2 - Pupils learn about light through an Institute of Physics activity delivered by STEM TEAM Cambridgeshire.
- Aerodynamics and Drag - KS2 - Pupils design and make vehicles, test them in a wind tunnel and see how drag affects movement - available only at our Duxford Science Fair.
- K'Nex Challenge - KS2 - Pupils are given an hour to design and build a model out of K'Nex which fulfills the design brief they are given.
- Hovercraft - KS2 - Pupils learn about the development of hovercraft in Cambridge, what hovercraft are used for and build their own model hovercraft using their knowledge of electric circuits.
- Microbes and Blood - KS2 - Pupils learn that microbes can be both harmful and beneficial. They then design an experiment to grow mould, record results over two weeks, draw conclusions and discuss. Pupils also learn about the components of blood, how blood clots and make model blood with sweets!
- Kites - KS1 and KS2 - Pupils learn about the physics which keeps a kite flying and make a kite to fly themselves.
- Plastic Bottle Rafts - KS1 - Pupils learn about recycling and the environment and make a raft out of discarded plastic bottles.
Please contact us for more details, costs and how to book an activity for your school.
STEM TEAM Duxford Annual Science and Technology Fair 9th June 2010
Working in partnership with Imperial War Museum Duxford Department for Learning, STEM TEAM Cambridgeshire run an Annual Science and Technology Fair. This is a great opportunity for pupils to work with STEM Ambassadors and learn in a stimulating environment.
Please contact us to register your interest for July 2010.
"The children learnt alot in a short time. They loved participating and it was great fun, the kids are buzzing!"
The Ambassadors bring a range of practical experience to the activities which enriches the pupils appreciation. They quickly adapt to the knowledge levels of the pupils and ask good open ended questions.
The British Science Association CREST*Investigators Scheme
STEM TEAM Cambridgeshire manage the British Science Association CREST*Investigator Scheme for Cambridgeshire. This scheme enables children from 5-12 years to solve scientific problems through practical investigation. The activities focus on thinking about, talking about and doing science. They are designed to be used primarily outside class time (e.g. in a science club). Each activity includes ACTIVITY CARDS for children and an ORGANISER'S INFORMATION SHEET with step by step instructions making it easy for someone without a science background to run the activity. To register for the scheme and buy resource packs, contact us.
